Lighting for your
Crediton Home or office
(some
helpful guidelines for Crediton households.)
Lighting alters mood!
You have probably been depressed by a
gloomy day in Crediton before now and studies show that some people who suffer
from depressions during the winter can be cured by extra light in
their home.
Due to the increased demand there now exists equipment for any requirement.
A fitting always enhances the character of light emerging but in the
end it is the lamp that emits the light. On the whole good lighting
means more. Money spent on good lighting is still a relatively inexpensive
way of improving your home.
If
carrying out an improvement don't leave the lighting budget till last.
You might get very involved in choosing colours, fabrics, fittings and
finishes in your home yet without lighting you will not be able to
appreciate it. It is developing at an accelerating speed and part of
this is in the development of more efficient light sources and in the
means of transmitting light.
Using fibre optics light can travel through
a small rod and come out elsewhere. Also using mirrors and lenses can
distribute the light from a single source in many directions. There
is no magic formula for lighting in a Crediton home or
office. When making
decisions about colour schemes for your home it is important to view
these in the final light you intend to have.

- light sources:
With lighting
you may consider daylight to be more important than artificial light
for example a white kitchen can look crisp in daylight but dull and
yellowish in incandescent lighting. Halogen light has an enhanced
blue spectrum and will look closer to daylight (but be wary because
they don't often last long and can be expensive!). This makes them a
more appropriate light source than an ordinary lamp. Light sources
are divided into "cool" e.g. blue and "warm" e.g. towards red.
Sunrise and sunset are warm and at noon the light is cool. In
ambience improvement the most common light source is the
incandescent lamp which is considered warm.
Indirect lighting provides a soft atmospheric light and depends on
reflection from a ceiling. Cove lights, up-lighters and table or floor
lamps with open tops all cast indirect light. It is best to use a
light coloured, matt-reflective surface. Shadows are a fact of light and reveal the objects size, shape and
position. Flat lighting has minimal shadow and is useful for example
if you are examining yourself.
Contrasts are useful to create an exciting atmosphere. This is done
by using accent or under-shelf lighting to punctuate display objects.
For a good effect you need a number of light sources.
If first impressions are
important then the entrance to your Crediton home is
a revealing feature. From a practical point of view the light should
illuminate your caller either directly or from reflected light. You
should also light any pathway, while it should be more dimly lit than
the doorway. Several softer and dimmer sources tends to be more pleasant.
Hallways are a good place to dramatically light any objects of particular
interest however you need to ensure there is sufficient light for
safety. Stairways also tend to be lit in a similar fashion to hallways
and again safety is an issue. Living rooms tend to be a multifunctional space and lighting will
depend on how you use the room. For interests sake the light should
not be uniform.

- sequence:
First of all,
in consultation with our electricians, light areas of specific interest and
consider the reflectivity of the walls, floor and ceiling. Concealed
lights can be used to hide cold cathode, fluorescent or incandescent
lamps. This technique can bounce light off a pale ceiling to provide
a soft indirect ambiance. Portable fittings are often used, but ensure
that any cables don't cross where people walk. The size of the shade
opening controls the spread of the light. Dining rooms require light
dependant on the use of the room. The most important thing is to create
an atmosphere.
Serving
and eating areas need to be lit accordingly but even in these areas
it needs to be done aesthetically. Table light is usually in the
form of an overhead fitting. Down-lights mean that people are seen
in deep shadows which is quite unflattering. Candle light provides a
good soft, warm light and is uniquely attractive.
